Workers' Compensation Insurance

Tree work is one of the most dangerous occupations in America. Workers' comp protects your crew and your business when injuries happen.

What It Covers

Workers' compensation insurance provides medical benefits and wage replacement for employees who are injured or become ill as a result of their work. For tree service companies, this includes coverage for chainsaw lacerations, falls from height, struck-by injuries from falling limbs, back injuries from lifting, heat exhaustion, and equipment-related accidents.

WC pays for emergency room visits, surgeries, rehabilitation, physical therapy, prescription medications, and ongoing medical care. It also provides partial wage replacement — typically two-thirds of the employee's average weekly wage — while they recover. In cases of permanent disability or death, WC provides long-term disability benefits or death benefits to the worker's family.

Why Tree Services Need It

Tree care consistently ranks among the top 10 most dangerous occupations in the United States, with fatality rates significantly higher than construction as a whole. Falls, struck-by incidents, and electrocution account for the majority of tree worker fatalities. Non-fatal injuries — chainsaw cuts, back strains, shoulder injuries — are even more common.

In 49 out of 50 states, workers' comp is legally required for tree service employers (Texas is the notable exception, though it's still strongly recommended). Operating without WC exposes you to criminal penalties, civil fines, and personal liability for all employee medical costs and lost wages. If an uninsured employee is seriously injured, the resulting lawsuit and medical bills can bankrupt your business.

Even in Texas, most general contractors and commercial clients require proof of WC before allowing you on their job sites.
